About Rojo Chispas
I am Rojo Chispas, aka, Jim Sparks. My painting career was inspired by the Vincent Van Gogh biographical movie, Lust for Life in 1959 while stationed with the army at La Rochelle, France. After my army discharge I lived and painted in the Haight Asbury neighborhood of San Francisco during the sixties and then applied at the San Francisco Academy of Art and Lone Mountain College with an intended Art Therapy major in 1968-69. Forgoing art therapy, I found more interest in gestalt and existential psychotherapy. I was granted Psychology and Anthropology degrees at the University of California, Santa Cruz (73-74) and a Masters in Psychology at Antioch University (1980), a PhD at Sanctus Theological College ended my formal academic studies in 1995. After a thirty-five year career in family counseling I now enjoy retirement, painting, dream analysis and conducting dream workshops, and an abiding interest in astrology.
My subject matter is multidimensional, macro and micro worlds that exist in our minds, dreams and universal consciousness. Inspired by the colors of Van Gogh and the psycheledic revolution, I see and paint worlds full of pulsating bright colors and movement, sometimes with a touch of humor. For me, bright colors emanate a state of well being and happiness, hopefully expanding your consciousness and making you feel good about yourself.
In the haunted house of life, art is the only stair that doesn't creak.
